The North Sea coast is filled with lots of islands, and it is one of Germany’s most popular holiday destinations. Some striking characteristics that make up the North Sea are its strong winds, wide horizons, and kilometers of sandy beaches. If those characteristics aren’t convincing enough, we have 5 more reasons to convince you to visit the North Sea!
The 1st reason to visit the North Sea is just because there are so many islands to explore, namely 12. The smallest one, with only 6.5 square kilometers is called Baltrum while the biggest one, Sylt, has 99 square kilometers. All the islands are very unique, and have something interesting to offer, but they all have one of the most important things in common: endless fine sandy beaches!
Reason number 2 to visit the North Sea islands is the wonderful beach life and holiday fun. For a small fee, you can rent out traditional wicker beach chairs and hide away from the wind. Watching the sea gulls is a great activity to pass the time. The direction of the wind will be what determines the direction you’re seated in, as the chairs are always positioned facing away from the wind.
Possibly one of the most convincing reasons, is reason number 3. Which are the seals!! The seals are the North Sea’s most popular inhabitants, and they make their home on the sandbanks between the islands. The baby seals that are orphaned are taken to rearing stations to help build their strength, and when their strength is restored, they are returned to the sea. Their return to the sea every year is always a spectacle to enjoy.
The Wadden Sea, which is listed as a UNESCO Natural World Heritage Site in 2009 is the 4th reason to visit the North Sea. Located between the islands and the mainland, the Wadden Sea only becomes visible every 6 hours when the sea recedes. You can go on guided Wadden Sea hikes to explore this unique habitat and the animals/plants that live in it.
Finally, last but not least we have reason number 5 which are the Halligen Islands. These islands are very interesting, and the perfect place to explore for those who want to feel close to nature and like nature’s elements. They are very small islands that don’t have protective dikes, this means that they get completely flooded during storm tides. People that live on these islands live on man-made mounds, in a very isolated existence following the rhythm of the tides.
