Indonesia is a beautiful country and has lots to offer, from picture perfect beaches, bustling cities, incredible wildlife, to rich culture and heritage. It is the largest country in Southeast Asia, and to see everything here would take years. That’s why, we have done some research for you and gathered the best spots to explore while you’re there.
Bali
Most people will usually start from Bali, it is one of the most touristic destinations in Indonesia. But this might be a good idea, in order to easily acclimate to later explore areas that are not as touristic. If you’re looking to relax, enjoy beautiful beaches and do some surfing, then Bukit is a good place to stay. Rent a scooter and bring your swim wear and explore the area. Another area you don’t want to miss while in Bali is Ubud – the cultural heart of Bali. This is where you’ll find all of the rice fields, loads of waterfalls, temples, yoga retreats and vegetarian dishes. However, keep in mind that Ubud is very touristic. If you’re looking for something less touristic, then head up to the north coast. And if you’re looking for a climbing adventure, then head to Mount Batur and experience one of the most beautiful sunrises ever.
Lombok
If you’re looking for a peaceful atmosphere, incredible snorkeling and stunning beaches then head to Lombok. Accessible from Bali with a speed boat or a ferry, in Lombok you will be immersed in nature and its beauty.
Flores
Flores is also a fairly large island in the archipelago of Indonesia. You can find a secret pink beach and breathtaking sceneries here. While you’re there, you should do a boat tour to Rinca island, Padar and Kelor islands. In Rinca island, you can see the infamous Komodo dragons, and the secret pink beach.
Yogjakarta
If you’re looking to get to know Indonesian culture and history better, then this is the place to be. You can also visit the world’s largest Buddhist temple, Borobudur, here. Borobudur temple is one of the most impressive archeological sites of Southeast Asia. Sailendra Dynasty built it in the 9th century and the temple consists of 9 stacked platforms. The whole compound has over 570 Buddha statues! Another site you shouldn’t skip is the Hindu temple Prambanan. This temple, the largest Hindu one in Indonesia, is part of UNESCO World Heritage. Built in 850 CE during the reign of Hindu Sanjaya Dynasty. The sunset here is supposed to be beautiful and not to be missed!
Karimunjawa Islands
Located just north of central Java, this is one of the more challenging places to get to. But high challenge, high reward because this place is incredible. There are barely any tourists, the atmosphere is very laid back, the snorkeling tours are incredible, and the beaches are paradise. It takes around 1 day to get here and 1 day to get back, which makes it hard but definitely worth the trip!
