Do you prefer a calm stretch of sand in the Caribbean? Or would you rather go for a romantic getaway in the middle of the Indian Ocean? There are enough options of beaches for everyone, to suit all kinds of preferences. Here are some of the best island beaches in the world!
1. Horseshoe Bay, Bermuda
Although this beach might be one of the most popular beaches in the world, it has a secret spot. Port Royal Cove is not known by many travelers. It has shallow water that is perfect for young kids to play around in and impressive rock formations that complement wonderfully the sand there – which, by the way, is pink! The Spicelands Equestrian Centre nearby offers trail rides down to this cove, if you want to investigate!
2. Siasconset Beach, Massachusetts
Located on the most eastern corner of the island, you can reach this beach from town by a 10 km bike ride on the Milestone Road path. There are restaurants for some delicious food, and restrooms nearby in the historic village of ‘Sconset. The Sankaty Head Light, built in 1850, is worth checking out. It is located on the northern tip of the beach, but keep in mind that it is only open to climb on specific days – and there aren’t many options. Don’t skip out on the ‘Sconset Bluff Walk at this beach, where you’ll have the rough waves of the strong Atlantic on one side and a row of multi-million-dollar homes on the other side. Make sure to layer up, as it can get quite chilly out there during the off season.
3. The Baths, Virgin Gorda, British Virgin Islands
Virgin Gorda is the island that is the 3rd largest of all the British Virgin Islands. When you go there, you’ll be immersed in the natural beauty that covers nearly all of its 22 square meters. Here, you’ll be met with quiet beaches, coves and natural parks filled with flora. Possibly the most beautiful attraction here is the Baths, a seaside area where huge granite boulders form scenic saltwater pools.
4. Unawatuna, Sri Lanka
This beach, Unawatuna, is considered to be one of the best sandy beaches on the island of Sri Lanka. It is located near the southern city of Galle, the water is calm and warm and doesn’t have rocks or reefs on the ocean floor – perfect for families and kids! Not so great for surfers though, we wouldn’t recommend going here if you’re looking to catch a wave. There is a small road that runs along the beach, filled with restaurants and cafes.
5. Honokalani Beach, Maui
the combination of the jet-black sand and the electric blue waters, with the thick jungle like foliage in the background is one not to be skipped. It is a picture-perfect scene; one might say a photographers dream! There’s lots of things to discover here, it is wild Hawaii at its best.
Fun fact, the sand here is made up of tiny lava pebbles!
